Alberto Alemanno is an academic, public interest lawyer, health and civic advocate. He is currently Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at HEC Paris and Global Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. Due to his commitment to bridge the gap between academic research and policy action, Alberto authored “Lobbying for Change: Find Your Voice to End Inequalities” (Icon, 2017), a timely analysis and guide to levelling the democratic playing field by empowering ordinary citizens to speak up and inform policy decisions at local, national and international level.

Alberto established eLabEurope, a civic start up committed to improve civic literacy, engagement and participation by lobbying in the public interest. His MOOC – Understanding Europe – available on Coursera has already trained more than 100.000 citizens about to gain a voice in the EU policy process thus rendering the EU more accountable. The EU Public Interest Clinic he established in Paris and New York enables every year dozens of students to provide pro bono advice to non-profit organizations active in EU policymaking around public health, open government and transparency across Europe, such as Transparency International, Wikimedia and Access Info Europe. As a result a new generation of civic advocates and public interest lawyers is emerging across the Atlantic.

Alberto is now working on the launch of The Good Lobby, the first advocacy skill-sharing community aimed at connecting people with expertise with civil society organizations who need them in pursuit of the public interest.  His Summer Academy in Global Food Law & Policy is at its 9th edition and has become the leading Summer Program for professionals, academics, policymakers working for a more sustainable & fairer food supply chain via law and policy.

Originally from Italy, Alberto is a graduate of Harvard Law School, the College of Europe and holds a PhD from Bocconi University. His scholarship on openness, transparency and civic engagement has considerably EU institutional setting and practice insofar as it identified new channels of participations for civil society organisations.

The World Economic Forum named Alberto Young Global Leader in 2015.
