J. Ralph Blanchfield, MBE, is a food science, food technology and food law consultant with his own international practice for the past 23 years, after having previously spent 35 years in industrial food science and technology and management with four large, highly diversified food companies. He is a Past President of the Institute of Food Science & Technology (IFST), and its current Chair of External Affairs and Webmaster; Past Chair, IFT British Section; Chairman of the UK Federation of Food Science & Technology: Vice President of the European Food Law Association of the UK; 2001-2002 Chair of the IFT Committee for Global Interests; Fellow and Honorary Fellow of IFST; Fellow of IFT; Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry; Fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health & Hygiene; in 1998 was elected one of the first group of Fellows of the International Academy of Food Science & Technology and was its President Elect for 2003-2006; and member of the Governing Council of IUFoST for 2003-2006.

The International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) presented the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award to J. Ralph Blanchfield  at the ceremony in Madrid recently.  Professor J. Ralph Blanchfield, MBE, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his tireless efforts "to enhance the status and professionalism of food scientists and technologists in the United Kingdom and globally. In addition, his contributions to technical and scientific policy and information are extremely significant. He has been recognized with a number of prestigious fellowships and awards." Also cited was his role "as mentor of countless individual professionals. His commitment to personal and professional development is truly outstanding, resulting in capacity building of the next generation (or two) of food professionals."
